M. Carter Design is a Richmond, Virginia-based, full-service interior design firm specializing in residential, boutique commercial, and hospitality projects. Our range of services spans the architectural and decorative aspects of design, from programming, space planning, custom millwork, and finish and fixture selections to furnishings and all other details that shape the character of a beautifully appointed space.

To each project, we bring extensive experience in navigating every aspect of the design process, with the goal of creating a functional and aesthetically pleasing environment that fulfills client’s needs, desires, and wellbeing—their vision, in other words. Paramount to the success of this process is listening closely and working collaboratively with each client throughout the project’s duration, from conceptual development to turnkey installation. We are widely regarded for establishing lasting relationships with our clients and a wide range of architects, builders, and trades.

In 2022, Mindy and Elisabeth joined forces to combine their talents and extensive experience. With a shared passion for their clients and work, they are inspired by the creative energy generated by their collaboration.

Mindy Carter Bain

Founder & Designer

Mindy launched a full-service interior design firm in 2013, after several years of managing interior design projects for a leading architectural firm in Richmond.

She is passionate about creating unique designs that capture her client’s vision and endure the test of time. She has a particular affinity for interior architecture and loves delving into custom cabinetry and millwork to create spaces that are as beautiful and detailed architecturally as they are decoratively.

Mindy’s extensive portfolio of residential, higher education, and hospitality projects includes new construction projects, renovations, historic properties, and office environments. She was honored to return to her alma mater as the lead designer for the new interior furnishings at Thomas Jefferson’s historic Rotunda at the University of Virginia, a project which received the 2017 AIA Interior Design Honor Award.

Mindy is an NCIDQ Certified Interior Designer for the Commonwealth of Virginia and a LEED Accredited Professional. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia and an MFA in Interior Environments from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Elisabeth Mullins

Designer

Elisabeth was born and raised in Richmond and graduated from the College of Charleston in South Carolina. Inspired by the architecture and beauty of her hometown, Charleston, and her Scandinavian heritage, she opened her own residential interior design firm in 2005. She has completed numerous projects in Virginia and as far north as Connecticut.

Elisabeth has an innate ability to step into a space and quickly identify areas for improvement and creative solutions. With a design sensibility that is both refined and beautifully expressive, she is masterful at weaving color, pattern, and texture and combining old and new design elements to create extraordinary, layered spaces.
